Who is UL?

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories Inc., an internationally recognized not-for-profit organization dedicated to public safety.

Founded in 1894, UL establishes, maintains and operates laboratories to examine and test products and components for safety hazards, and to develop and publish industry standards affecting such hazards. Products are randomly re-inspected to ensure the standards are maintained with the certification removed if found otherwise.

What Does A UL Listing Mean For You?

UL Recognized vs. UL Listed

UL Recognition means the product has been evaluated as a component to be used with other components or products, and is not intended for stand-alone use. UL Listed products are complete and intended to be used on their own. For example, furniture power is UL Recognized when designed for installation in an unspecified product, such as a desk, and only UL listed if the power and desk are evaluated together. Relocatable power taps are UL Listed when they are designed to be used as a stand-alone product without installation.

TUV

Who is TUV?

TUV or TUV Rheinland is a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) dedicated to testing products to standards established by Underwriter Laboratories, ANSI-BIFMA, etc. TUV originated in Europe but they operate globally with a North American office covering regulations for the United States and Canada.

Like other NRTLs, TUV establishes, maintains and operates testing facilities to independently examine products and components for safety hazards.

Who Is The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute?

The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 2001 with the mission of improving human health and quality of life by enhancing indoor air quality and reducing people’s exposure to chemicals and other pollutants. In keeping with that mission, GEI certifies products and materials for low chemical emissions and provides a free resource for choosing healthier products and materials for indoor environments.
